What is the Teaching Knowledge Test?

The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) is a series of modular teaching qualifications that will give you a Cambridge Certificate for each completed module. It is ideal for people who need to prove their teaching knowledge with a globally recognised certificate. The examination is structured flexibly, allowing you to study and prepare at your own pace and according to your availability.

Module 2 – Lesson planning and use of resources for language teaching
This module focuses on what teachers consider and do while planning their teaching. It also considers the linguistic and methodological reference resources that are available to guide teachers in their lesson planning.

Who is it for?

The Teaching Knowledge Test is especially tailored for teachers at the foundation or developing stage in their careers, including teachers in training or that wish to update or increase their knowledge after having started teaching.

It is also recommended for teachers who started teaching English after having taught other subjects, as well as new teachers and more experienced teachers without formal teaching qualifications.

What level is it?

The Teaching Knowledge Test is a foundational and developmental-level certification, placing it above a CELTA certification. For the Cambridge English teaching certification chart, click here.

What are the benefits of TKT?

  • TKT is accessible and flexible: there are no compulsory components, and it is structured for independent learning
  • It helps with teacher development, increasing his or her self-confidence and aptitude in the classroom
  • It increases familiarity with language-teaching terminology and current practices
  • It is a great starting point for more advanced qualifications
  • There are no specific criteria for enrolments or language requirements

You can learn about all of the benefits for schools and teachers and the contents assessed by this test in this document.

How to study for these exams?

Candidates can study by themselves with the help of practice books, as well as through an online course you can purchase via our online bookshop. Some schools also offer preparation courses for this certification. You can find the free handbook and glossary on the Cambridge website.

How much does it cost?

Each individual TKT module costs €75,00. You can enrol in as many modules as you choose.
